minor site updates

  • added nl west standings widget: a nice way to keep track of the padres’s record (> .500, baby!)
  • added world cup schedule calendar: it’s a custom google calendar i set up… just the countries that i’d be interested in watching
  • added last.fm badge to the footer with my other social networking icons. i think it’s a little better than pandora — you get unlimited skips and minimal ads (for now)… i really like their slideshow thing when music plays… it’s slick

product review: misc blackberry apps

i <3 my blackberry… it’s just like a computer.. i dunno why i haven’t gone the smartphone route till now…

tho the fact that it’s like a computer is kinda deadly for me — i tinker with it a ton… whether it’s changing settings or installing random apps…

i had a ton of issues in the beginning, especially when i would do a restart (quickpull) — the phone would just essentially do a BSOD

i finally figured out what was wrong — basically, the data i was restoring from wasn’t reliable… so now i know what to do if my phone dies (so i got that going for me…)

so yea, here’s a list of my favorite apps i have currently on my phone:

  • ubertwitter: by far, the best twitter client on the bberry. it loads quick and it has easy to remember hotkeys. i tried twixtreme (which sounds more like a candy than a twitter client), but it didn’t work too well for me — it’s pretty tho… but i’ll stick with uber!
  • scoremobile: i used to just go to espn mobile on the browser, but that isn’t the best… takes a long time to load and doesn’t always refresh. so i tried this out and it’s pretty good so far. really fast loading and has almost any sport you would care about. it can run in the background and refreshes too! one of the cool features is that you can mark a team as a favorite, which will have it display at the top of the list on the scoreboard
  • itookthisonmyphone: i’m all about backing important files up — like pictures.  so this app will AUTOMAGICALLY upload your photo to a secure site — you can set the pics to go to a public or private folder. you might be thinking, “but i have a microSD card” — yea… so did andy… ouch…
  • drivesafe.ly: this is more of a fun app, but can be pretty useful. it will read your incoming text messages out loud. i wrote a post previously about the fun times you can have with this…
  • bigtincan mapper: this is a cool gps type app that can give you your longitude/latitude position, which can come in handy. it can also track your routes

so those are the not-so mainstream apps out there that you might wanna give a try… i also have these more popular apps: google talk (awesome since talk got blocked at work), gmail, facebook, google sync (syncs with my google calendar!), pandora, and weathereye (shows an icon of the current weather)

you could be a part-time model

boo pandora — i don’t like how the desktop AIR app now requires an upgraded PAID account to download. looks like if you already have it installed, it’ll still work… but still — it’s been bugging me lately too: limited skips in an hour, ads, same songs… etc

lastfm-logo

so i started lookin’ for other means of internet radio and “found” (yea i’m late to this bus) last.fm — and it comes with an AIR app as well (it’s a bit buggy — still version 0.2 and last.fm’s data center malfunction might’ve been the cause)

made some purchases over the weekend –

got this bad boy (geoff got one too, paid with bananas, of course! boo yah)

ubuntu-logo

i currently have a winXP and ubuntu dual boot setup (but i’m thinking of trying win7, since geoff has given it rave reviews so far)

it’s sick — it’s good for sports scores or general email — uses a lot less energy too

then ordered one of these sandisk sansa clips (1gb) — at that price… i couldn’t let it pass me by

and then i finished it all up with an iPod/MP3 player kit for my car — i’ve been getting tired of XM lately so i’ll be cancelling that now that i have this. the kit is a little quirky but it can play non-iPod players, which is where the sansa clip will come in… i’m very happy about this — something i’ve been wanting for my car for soooo long

they actually did a good job at bestbuy!

just to get by, just to get by…

many people knock it, but i actually like vista… sure, it has its downsides like the UAC, but it’s a visually pleasing OS

so there’s the sidebar thingy, which is pretty cool… the ones i currently use:

ben folds sayin' "whatup"

ben folds sayin' "whatup"

i just got the chirpr (twitter app), pandora, and php function finder gadgets… we’ll see how those work out — so far chirpr is pretty cool… it notifies me (with a sound) when a new tweet is posted by anyone i’m following…

pandora i think will be a mainstay — i haven’t compared the gadget vs. having it in the browser (resources), but i would think that having it in the sidebar would be a lot better

the php function finder is a wildcard at this point… i think it’ll come in handy when i mess with sites and stuff… but we’ll see
