wordpress: installing wordpress locally on your pc

as i write the title of this tutorial, i can tell it might get long and/or complicated… i’ll try my best… here we go

FIRST, you’ll need the tools — download virtual pc (especially if you run windows vista) and then grab an image here — i would suggest getting the IE6 image, since that version of IE is the “worst” of them all
(more…)

chex mix, you’re the snack for me

so i’ve had this netbook for some time now, running ubuntu. i think i can bust a few pros and cons:

pros

  • runs REALLY well on the netbook
  • manages the battery well — i can run this for several days (light to medium usage) before chaging
  • multiple desktops — comes in super handy when working with a small monitor

cons

  • NO FLASH! this kills it for me… even youtube won’t show the video (or is suuuper laggy) — the whole point for getting this netbook was to keep track of sports scores and stuff, but most sites (espn, mlb) use flash scoreboards… fml
  • not all programs work in ubuntu — i just want a good twitter program like destroy twitter, but nope… i gotta use this janky one called twittux, which doesn’t even have a retweet button!
  • doesn’t really play well with the file sharing and print network setup i have here…

i think that’s it… at least the most important ones to me…

overall, i’m gonna switch back to winxp — tho i’d really like win7 on here… i don’t wanna get TOO used to it (it’ll only be free for so long)

tech: microsoft live mesh

live-mesh

so microsoft has this new online app thingy called mesh… it’s similar to dropbox in that you can share a folder/files with other people… buuut, it also has a cool remote desktop feature

this prevents the need to email files (or flash drive) so that you can access it from another computer — you just sync a folder that you want to access elsewhere and then sign on to mesh from that other computer — boom!

the coolest feature is remote desktop — you can actually connect to another computer and see the desktop (the other computer needs to have it installed, duh)… pretty neat-o

the coolest part about it is that it works well with vista… ha!

speaking of microsoft, there’s some talk about them buying out facebook… damn… that punk’s gonna be richer than rich (so you n*ggas come and get me) — i’m just jealous

just to get by, just to get by…

many people knock it, but i actually like vista… sure, it has its downsides like the UAC, but it’s a visually pleasing OS

so there’s the sidebar thingy, which is pretty cool… the ones i currently use:

ben folds sayin' "whatup"

ben folds sayin' "whatup"

i just got the chirpr (twitter app), pandora, and php function finder gadgets… we’ll see how those work out — so far chirpr is pretty cool… it notifies me (with a sound) when a new tweet is posted by anyone i’m following…

pandora i think will be a mainstay — i haven’t compared the gadget vs. having it in the browser (resources), but i would think that having it in the sidebar would be a lot better

the php function finder is a wildcard at this point… i think it’ll come in handy when i mess with sites and stuff… but we’ll see

now, more than ever…

…that has to be one of the most annoying phrases in advertising right now

another annoying thing is the new microsoft “i’m a pc” commercials where they have kids doing different tasks: sending pictures via email, making a panoramic picture, or making a video — “i’m a pc and i’m seven years old!”

but the truth is… with any kind of technology, a seven year old is easier to train than a, say, 40-50 year old… the difference is that old people are stubborn jackasses

i HATED in tech support when an old guy would say, “i’m technologically illiterate” — which is bullsh*t… you just don’t want to learn

it’s just like that tech support video i posted previously… gawd
