think: "twitter turned into a game"

so i’ve been trying this relatively new social networking trend called “foursquare”

according to their wiki page, it was created back in march 2009 and has a whopping 7 employees. i’m not bashing on that… it actually motivates me that a small company can start something as big as this is (or will be).

at its core, it’s fairly simple — wherever you go, you “check in” and get points and possibly some other perks

i’m foursquare friends with chaunce, geoff, and possibly rob (who has yet to make a check in) and it’s turning into a fierce competition.

we already made a rule between us: no checking into work (cuz it’s like checking into home — you GOTTA be there)

businesses are slowly starting to jump on board, offering discounts or even free things if you check in or are a mayor (respectively)

the badges are one of the perks you can get, some of them are pretty slick — the douchebag badge is my favorite… i need to obtain this one… i think places tagged as douchebag are like higher class hotels, restaurants, or stores (ed hardy beyotch!)

if you wanna try it out, you gotta at least have an iphone, blackberry, or android-type phone… the apps NEED to be greatly improved if they really want this social network to expand like its brethren… tho right now it’s doing fine for the basic things like checking in and seeing where your friends are… but other stuff like updating photos, to do’s, top 12′s, etc. aren’t built in

yes, it’s still relatively a baby… but who knows — try it out and see what happens… then you could be like, “i was on foursquare before ashton kutcher got on it”

the funny thing is that my boss actually recommended it to me and chaunce…

and some not so obvious… like my site… my site was blocked for “entertainment” — i mean, c’mon! my site is definitely NOT entertaining… i think it was categorized when i had a bunch of youtube videos on the home page…

so this basically stopped me from being able to view my own site at work (unless i used quota, which we have 60 minutes of each day — yea… bull)

so i had enough… i remembered that chaunce actually contacted websense  a while back and had his site recategorized

and at work, because of my title here, i am able to view sites categorized as “social networking and personal sites” — allowing me to see facebook, twitter, and other blogs

so here’s the email i sent websense:

Hello -
I would like to request that my blog get recategorized to the “Social Networking and Personal Sites” category — currently it is set up under the “Entertainment” category.

At my workplace, I have been granted access to view sites categorized under “Social Networking and Personal Sites” because of my position as Web Developer.

so here i am now… writing a post from work on 11/18! i had no idea i’d get a response THAT fast

so to websense… your response time to review claims and subsequently update your database rocks! work’s usage of websense still stinks… ha

they have a good/small set of apps that can be useful — i really like how they can be run in the background (boom!)…

here’s one good review site for all things blackberry: crackberry.com

anyway, i found this awesome app called drivesafe.ly — it reads your incoming texts so you don’t have to lose your focus while driving (cuz i’m already reading, smoking, and drinking… pfft)…

not only does it read names and texts really well… it makes for some fun times.

i’m still playin’ with it… but i think i might buy it… $14 one time? not bad at all…

had to take a half day at work and even got “wellness formula” from jimbo’s (per chaunce) — the pills taste nasty, but i think it might’ve helped (more on this later)

so i meet up with mark, dwight, tim, and mitch at the stone brewery 13th anniversary over at the csu san marcos campus…

this was my first time going to one of these things, and boy… i’ve been missing out. it was such a slick time — my only gripe was that it was effington hot… “mike’s beer cheese” was amazing

i still think coconut+porter is a great mix!

we all got sloshed for 3 hours and decide to walk across the street to have some stir fresh mongolian bbq

we get a few feet from the place and mark and dwight suddenly want to chase me down and beat me up… wtf? so i immediately channel adrian petersen and i fuckin’ run… i run and i juke… i almost get hit by cars in the parking lot and on my last juke… i hear a loud THUD behind me… i turn around and i see a mangled mess of limbs and whiteness — it’s mark

he friggin curbstomped himself

he gets up and blood everywhere — dripping from his chin onto his shirt

quickly we get him to a mr. taco bathroom where he washes a little bit — to the disgust of the patrons… as we’re leaving, everyone’s eyes are on the tall white bald bastard and his entourage… i whisper to them, “yea… i kicked his ass”

so then — even tho we were hungry, we decide it’s in mark’s best interest to go to a hospital — i see a “pph” sign (palomar pomerado health — the only reason i know this is because tomlinson does a commercial for them) and we start walking

frick — it’s closed… mark starts whining, “waah… my chest hurts…  waah… i’m losing a lot of blood”

so i have to do a quarter mile windsprint back to my car (drunk no more — adrenaline and i sweat it all out) and drive back to the closed clinic and take us to a kaiser permanente

never knew about "intermediate care"

once inside, we are loud and belligerent… so much so that we get kicked out of the waiting room… (actually, tim and i — the quietest of the bunch… the ones who were half asleep — us)

his shirt was white before the fall..

so we ended up going to the lobby and tim actually does something i never knew he could do — sleep… and i try to take a nap… meanwhile, dwight commandeers a wheelchair (three of them actually) and does a tour de france all around the hospital and around the perimeter

mark finally gets out with 8 stitches in his chin, some scrapes and bruises, but nothing else serious

overall… best stone anniversary ever! (it was kinda like the hangover… but not as funny)

oh so if you wanna see the gash (pre-stitches), click here — very graphic tho — looks like a vagina in mark’s chin… it’s breathing too! PIC (if you don’t wanna click on it, it reminded me of kuato in total recall)

this tutorial deals with the user wanting a site with a blog and pages, but the user wants a specific page to be the front page, not the blog (something similar to andy’s site, but not — since he doesn’t want his site to be full-on wordpress)

*note, i suck at technical writing, but i’ll try to fake it… i’m open to suggestions/comments for future tutorials

there’s a few things you’ll need to do before logging into the wp account:

i’m assuming that you’ll want this front page (and other pages) to have the same look and feel as your blog pages…

so open up explorer and make a copy of index.php — rename the copy whatever you want (i renamed it to “page2.php”)

copy index.php and rename copy to page2.php

next, let’s edit page2.php…

add the following text to the top of the code:

*/
?>

open page2.php and add text to top of code

i put “page2″ but i’m pretty sure you can put whatever you want here — i’ll show ya where this displays in a few steps…

ok go ahead and upload page2.php to your server — should i assume that you know where to put it? (i guess i should’ve done a “getting started” tutorial first…)

now log into the admin and go to Pages > Add New

choose the page title wisely, this’ll be your blog’s address

note where it shows template to the right side — this is where that “page2″ came into play

name the new page and change the template to "page2"

click Publish

now go to Settings > Reading

change “Front page displays” to “A static page (select below)”:

* choose one of your (already created) pages for the “Front page”
* change “Posts page” to “blog”

click Save Changes

update Settings > Reading page

that should be it! if you go to the home page of your site, you’ll see it’s now your chosen page — and then if you append “/blog” to your domain, it’ll take you to the actual posts…

...and /blog page has all the blog posts

boom… you’re pregnant.

yea i know… the site’s been collecting a bit of dust, which normally means that i’ve been busy with projects or i’m lazy (or both)

so what’s been up?

• i’m still drinking beer… i’ve broken the goal of 50… and of course i’m behind on writing about them… talk about fanfare, eh? i think i want to blame wordpress for that… first for releasing 2.8, which had tons of issues (or maybe my site design had the issues… nahhhh). but then i just recently upgraded to 2.8.1, which is a lot better, i don’t get as many errors (they’re still there, but i can write posts at least)
  i found out it’s mostly to do with old plugins that aren’t compatible with the new versions… which is lame-o!
• on the topic of web development, things have been movin’ along well at work and gorirra… i think i’m running myself ragged tho — after these projects on the table, i think i’m gonna take a break somehow… doubt it tho — oh well…
• hung out with the fpsa kids over the fourth, where our motto was “24 hours to live” — fun times…
• padres stink, as they are wont to do… effin’ a… football’s right around the corner i guess
• i twitter a bunch, so you can pretty much follow my going’s-ons there… (left column of my site — booyah)

is that it? i think so… everything’s been pretty much status quo…

ahh… so here’s something — chaunce, andy, and i were talking about clever ways to hide particular files on one’s computer… i’m sure you all have clever ideas, so post it out… you can be “anonymous” if you want (tho i’ll know who you are, you dirty bastard)

i know mark has a folder on his desktop that says, “mark’s 2008 tax stuff” — very clever, mark… very clever.
